Tamatori Matsuri (Tamaseri), a grand and rigorous Shinto ritual held every year.

This traditional event is said to have started in the Muromachi period (1333-1573), about 600 years ago.

The “Tamadori Matsuri” is a grand and strict ritual held every year at Hakozaki Shrine, one of the three largest Hachimangu shrines in Japan, along with Ishimizu Shrine in Kyoto and Usa Shrine in Oita Prefecture. Also known as “Tamaseri”, it is one of the three major festivals in Kyushu known throughout Japan.

The origin of the festival is not known, but it is believed to have started about 600 years ago during the Muromachi period (1336-1573).

The two wooden balls, one yin and one yang, are purified in a ball-washing ceremony starting at 1:00 p.m., and then carried to the Tamatori Ebisu Shrine, a branch shrine located about 250 m to the east. After the ceremony here, the yang ball is handed over to the bidders, who are dressed naked and wearing a kimono, and the ceremony begins.

It is said that touching the ball will bring good luck and help one escape from bad luck and misfortune, so the men in shimekomi (a ceremonial kimono with a tight fitting) compete for the ball as they are drenched with water.

The yin and yang balls are eventually handed over to the priests waiting at the tower gate, and the two balls are placed together again in front of the shrine.

The battle for the balls, which are divided between the land side and the beach side, is meant to divine the good fortune of the year, and it is said that if the ball is given to the land side, there will be a good harvest, and if the ball is given to the beach side, there will be a good catch of fish.
