🎉 May 3–4: Hakata Dontaku Port Festival
The Hakata Dontaku Port Festival takes place every year on May 3 and May 4, during Japan’s Golden Week holidays. It is one of Hakata’s most iconic and lively events.
The festival traces its origins back about 840 years to the traditional folk celebration “Hakata Matsubayashi,” which began in 1179. Over the centuries, it has been carefully preserved and developed through the efforts of local citizens. In 1962, it became an official “Fukuoka Citizens’ Festival,” open to everyone.
Today, the festival attracts more than two million visitors from Japan and around the world, making it one of the largest festivals in the country.
