Hakata Gion Yamakasa is held annually from July 1st to 15th, during which the city of Hakata is adorned with splendidly decorated floats, called kazariyama, standing about 15 meters tall.
Starting from July 10th, the kakiyama floats from seven teams known as nagare race through the streets of Hakata, culminating in the grand finale, Oiyama, in the early morning of the 15th.
In 2016, Hakata Gion Yamakasa was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, attracting attention from all over the world.
Around July 10th to 14th, you can witness the kakiyama being paraded around the streets, including Doi Street right in front of WeBase Hakata and the surrounding area.
There is also a unique custom known as kioimizu, where spectators splash water from buckets onto the kakiyama bearers.
The dramatic contrast between the powerful water splashes and the rushing floats is truly breathtaking — we highly recommend experiencing the intensity of this event up close at least once.
