A recommended bakery in Fukuoka City

1. Dacomecca, Hakata

This popular bakery beside Hakata station has a unique layout that takes you on a journey as you peep at what’s on offer. As soon as you walk through the doors you’ll be met with a smoky grill, charring the edges of sausages and ham to fill some of Dacomecca’s incredible breads. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to savoury options here, with several styles of nutritious loaves stuffed with the likes of their signature fillings like hotdog, tandoori chicken, and hamburger. As for sweets, we highly recommend the pecan maritozzi bun.

2. Pain Stock, Tenjin

Experts in bread, Pain Stock has become famous as “Fukuoka’s best bakery” and often has lines waiting out the door. They’re particularly known for their mentaiko baguette and we recommend the earl grey and white chocolate bread for a sweet fix. The Tenjin store also has a coffee stand, Coffee County, attached – serving wonderful coffees with beans roasted in Kurume for you to enjoy alongside your baked goods. You can find Pain Stock’s second location in Hakozaki for a less crowded option, but be careful of timing as the opening hours for each location are different.

3. Boulangerie Le Bamtan, Akasaka

The pastries at Boulangerie Le Bamtan are some of the finest in Fukuoka. Their perfectly laminated croissants with coloured stripes have different fillings such as matcha and framboise (raspberry custard), but you can also find classics like pain au chocolat and almond croissants here. They also have a selection of fresh breads, tarts, buns, and more! If you’re up for a walk, then we suggest picking out some items here before grabbing a coffee from the nearby cafe Carbon Coffee and enjoying it all while watching the turtles sunbathe in Ohori Park.

4. Patisserie au fil du jour, Sakurazaka

Tucked away in the nearby streets of Ohori Park, you’ll find Patisserie au fil du jour. This shop specialises in delicate items that are impressive both visually and in flavour. Their entremets are sensational, with several layers of perfectly balanced cakes, mousses, and fruit elements that just melt in the mouth – the ‘dix saveurs’ is particularly refreshing on a warm summer day. They also have a selection of cookies, financiers and madeleines that can be combined to create the perfect gift box for someone special.

5. OYATUYA.U, Sakurazaka

Just down the road from Patisserie au fil du jour is OYATUYA.U – a small shop specialising in pound cakes and a variety of cookies. The cakes are packed with flavour and super moist and the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are satisfyingly crisp, with the sweetness of the chocolate perfectly balanced with a touch of salt. The owner here is also incredibly friendly and welcoming, making the experience of stopping into the tiny store worth it. Note that this place is only open two days a week so plan ahead if you’d like to visit.
