Meet Japan’s Largest “Otafukumen” at Kushida Shrine

“Otafukumen”

During the Setsubun festival, people often pay a visit to Kushida Shrine (5 mins walk from our hostel) to make wishes and celebrate the incoming season of spring.

Held annually from 15 of January until 15 of February,  with three enormous 5 meters height smiling women’s face masks located at all entrances of Kushida Shrine.

Period: 2025/1/15 (Wednesday) – 2025/2/16 (Sunday)

Location of Otafukumen: Sakura Gate, Hokujin Gate, and Minami Gate

Grand Setsubun Festival

2025/2/2 (Sunday):

11:00 – Setsubun Fuku Welcoming (Purification of Otafukumen)

17-18:00 – Night Festival before Setsubun

2025/2/3 (Monday):

9:00 – Grand Setsubun Festival

10-18:00 (Every 30 mins) – Mamemaki (Throwing beans)

***Around 10:00 – “The Demon living in Oboro Forest” (Oboro-no-morinisumuoni) Kabuki show for February at Hakataza Theatre by KABUKI NEXT (From 2025/2/4 until 2025/2/25 ), the schedule of Mamemaki (throwing beans) event will depends on the casts performing there.***
